This album was on all of our Best of 2010 lists, obviously not by coincidence. All We Grow is the brilliant debut album from Sean Carey, classical percussion major and drummer of Bon Iver. Since 2008, he has compiled and recorded songs while on break from Bon Iver for this solo release. I'm not here to give a technical/professional review that you can read on Pitchfork. I'm just here just to tell you what I know and how beautiful I find this record. The video below doesn't do his vocals justice, his voice is best when quiet and contained. I've said this about a few vocalist, like Sheena Ozzella from Lemuria, and it's nothing about recording tricks.
By all means I don't want to compare S. Carey with Bon Iver or any Justin Vernon projects, but if you enjoy them (DeYarmond Edison, Volcano Choir) then you will most certainly enjoy this as well. I remember Cason saying that this was even better than Bon Iver, but that's too hard of a decision for me. I also recommend listening to this with headphones for the full experience. Happy Listening.

IT SNOWED IN FLORIDA TODAY!
And I have a really great playlist going that consists of S. Carey, Bombay Bicycle Club, Johnny Flynn, Horse Feathers, and The Tallest Man on Earth.
Two dudes from one of my favorite blogs, Oh No, I'm Late for School, check out this 2 song demo and show your friends. No doubt it's not enough songs, but hopefully they put out some more asap.

P.s. Sorry for being so short, I wanted to put this up before I went to blow money on a new record player.

Feedback.
Hello all,
I hope everyone is having a great Holiday Season. I know we are. It's chilly in Florida but not TOO cold. I can't speak for Mike in Nevada, but no one can right now. He is internetless, so basically, he doesn't exist.
I'm writing to you all this evening to ask a favor. Could you all leave us feedback in our chatbox to the left of this post? It would be greatly appreciated. Good or bad. Ask us for records you want. Tell us to find records. Tell us we are doing a good job. Tell us we are doing an awful job. Tell us what you had on your pizza last night. Tell us what record you are looking forward to. Tell us how embarrassed you are for the New York Giants after their loss last night. Tell us how much you hate your ex boyfriend/girlfriend. Anything, anything at all. In the future, we want to make this website more like a community, but we are working towards it at a snails pace.
Thank you for all your views, reads and support. Continue to spread the word and we will continue to spread our brand of Holiday Cheer. Happy Holidays everyone. Stay warm, stay dry and stay ill.
I'm not in a huge mood to write tonight, just to post, but that's OK with this record since it's on every other blog you probably read. I'm posting it because I slept on this record all year. It's Chris Colohan from Cursed's band, so you have an idea of what it sounds like already (if you haven't already listened to it). It sounds like Cursed but less hardcore and more rock n roll. It's like Bars but WAY WAY heavier. Heavy, sludgy and straight up rockin. Shit is serious. Shit is good.
Putting things in the simplest terms possible, I LOVE catchy pop/ up beat/ fun emo bands. Who doesn't? I realize that the majority of my recent posts have been of this variety so don't skim over this "description" without listening. Family Might, a four piece out of Missouri, released this 2010 EP earlier in the year but is also releasing another EP within the next few weeks. Not to mention they are working on a full length, so I'll be anticipating both releases.
On another note I wish bands like this would play Jacksonville more often rather than shit generic hardcore, it would be refreshing. Family Might is unsigned, props to the do it yourself-ers. If we eventually establish a label I would sign them stat.
I also would like to mention this awesome video I saw on the Topshelf board.
First things first, talk about a late contender for a lot of "top 5 best of 2010" list right here. I'm not going to write a long review on this for three reasons. The first being that if you click the "buy" link above (which you should be doing without being told) you will see a long review of this record. The second, I just got it and haven't even listened to it all the way through and the third, I'm exhausted. Just know that this record is incredible and it's sound fits somewhere between something Mark Kozelek related and Pygmy Lush with a lot of 90's shoegaze thrown in for good measure. No seriously, that's what it sounds like. I know, it's almost too good to be true.
Cherbourg was a short lived band that rose the popularity in the London folk scene in 2008, and my opinion, their career was entirely TOO short. They are tagged with the word folk quite a bit, but not every song is entirely folky. One thing is for sure, these guys knew how to write catchy and beautiful harmonies. The vocal style doesn't stray too far from Irish forgotten band Snow Patrol, but with a heavy London accent.
The two areas where this band really shined was their percussion and their choruses. All the songs are beautiful, but their melodies and tones in the chorus of all these songs is simply beautiful and inspiring. If this band were still around, and exposed in this country they would have blown up and been in commercials, movies etc, but they didn't. We are just left we these two EPs and one single, and boy, are they good.
A week or so ago I posted Peter Broderick's newest and beautiful record and when I made that post I made a mental note to make this one soon after, but as I said in a few posts ago we have all been so busy. So, finally, I give you Peter's little sister, Heather Woods Broderick from Portland, Oregon.
Heather's sound doesn't stray to far from her brother's. Long, drawn out, orchestrated instrumental songs paired with simply heartbreaking songs in which she shares her beautiful voice with us. I said the Peter Broderick post that is one of those people that make you sick because everything they do is artistic and beautiful and his little sister is no exception.
There was talk about a new record from her this year and I got very eager, but it was just a short fun of this record pressed on vinyl that sold out very hastily. If you are a fan of Peter's and haven't heard her yet, then I suggest you do. If you have never heard either, I suggest you listen quickly. This music is beautiful paired with anything. Sleeping, writing, cooking, talking, loving, or just living. You're welcome.
Do you listen to Athens, Georgia's Witches? Well you should. Led by Cara Beth Satalino, they play lo-fi, fuzzy tunes you would expect from Athens and that's what you are getting from Satalino's solo EP. This is the kind of stuff you would expect to hear on your college radio station. While it is straight forward lo-fi indie rock with a bit of twang to it, it still defies genres, but what should know that it is good...really good. They are signed to Salinas Records of the No Idea family, so that gives you some idea of what they sound like, but I fully believe that Witches and Cara Beth are some of the most underrated stuff out there right now. Give it a listen. You won't be let down.
I've been listening to a lot of girls lately. This is one of them and that sounds totally sexist. Oh well. Lotte Kestner is the solo work of Anna-Lynn Williams of Trespassers William from Seattle. If you listen to Trespassers William then you know what you are in store for. Slow, shoegazzy, ambient folk stuff, but the only difference between the band and Just Anna-Lynn's solo work is her solo work is much more stripped down and quiet. It's like Cat Power and Grouper's new record combined with less drone.
This kind of stuff is good for this time of year, so if you like quiet, timeless melancholy folk music then this is for you. Please enjoy this and the next few posts.
Joseph from Koalacaust emailed us and asked us to put this up a while ago but with half of us having finals, me fracturing my nose and all of us going through handfuls of other life events, we have gotten a bit in the weeds with updating, but alas my nose is better so at least I'm back to posting. Raccoon eyes and all.
Koalacaust is a great, fun band hailing from Santa Monica and their sound doesn't stray to far from bands such as Defiance Ohio, The Wild, Andrew Jackson Jihad, and all the other folk inspired punk bands that would have a home in Gainesville. Koalacaust is a little different, because I feel they are a little more accessible than Defiance or even Andrew Jackson Jihad, which to me, is a good thing. Their songs have more structure and more maturity. So basically , if you are a fan of aforementioned bands or just punk rock in general you will be a fan of this. Thanks to Joseph for sending it in.
Pre-orders for my band Caravels brand new self titled 7" are up today at Topshelf Records. We're very proud of these songs and are very excited to share them with everyone. For all who may be interested, please feel free to check out the awesome package deals available in the Topshelf store. Thank you!
Essential ambient/ instrumental/ experimental post rock. It's extremely possible that I could write about them for an hour BUT there is such a thing as homework. FFO If These Trees Could Talk, Explosions in the Sky, and Caspian. On a cold winter night wrapped in blankets and surrounded by textbooks, this does a lot of good.
Frank Turner is former frontman of British post-hardcore band Million Dead and has been making a name for himself with his solo career. Leaving only the sound of hardcore and punk rock sound behind, he has fully embraced the ideals and outlook of the punk rock community and pours it all into a very unique British folk sound that can only be described as "Frank Turner." Songs about love, anti-9:00-5:00, family and friends and never growing up are just a few of the topics often found in Turner's ballads.
This EP is the first new recorded material since Turner's third full length record "Poetry of the Deed," which was released early last year. The material featured on this EP is more of what we love from Turner. He pretty much sticks with what you would expect from him, but there is nothing wrong with that. This is merely wetting our pallets as an appetizer while we wait for the new record to come out. If you are a long time fan of Turner or just finding out about him, pick this and everything up and support him so he can come back to the states.
Another band that I posted when their 2010 album was released and never got around to sharing their previous music. Flaws (2010) is a large leap away from the original Bombay sound. You can get that here, it's a perfect folk album, be sure to listen to "Ivy & Gold" and the best song "Flaws". I Had the Blues but I Shook Them Loose has a more polished, full, British alternative electronic sound. It's still awesome though, if you like anything that sounds like Foals you will like this. I'm obviously in a sharing mood more than writing, sorry for that!
-Em
This version of "Dust on the Ground" is leaning towards an Ian Curtis vibe, but the version on Flaws is a lot more enjoyable, to me at least. The acoustic, or Flaws version is below the first video.
A while ago I posted this fellow when his second LP, Been Listening (here), leaked. With the semi-cold weather in Florida and his first release A Larum, I am nostalgic. One of my favorite songs of all time is "Brown Trout Blues", it's haunting, charming, and depressingly romantic. Many songs on this album have cheery folk melodies such as "Tickle Me Pink", but a select few are delicate.
From the previous post: Johnny Flynn (singer/ songwriter/ poet/ actor) and The Sussex Wit are a nu-folk band from London, England. Johnny's traditionally influenced songs have an old charm about them. There's just something settling about an English farm-raised school boy with a heavy accent, playing a mandolin in a sweaty damp bar. For fans of The Tallest Man on Earth, Laura Marling, and Jeremy Warmsley.
Street Smart Cyclist has recently played not one, but two reunion shows after breaking up in 2008. It's actually quite pathetic that upon being invited on Facebook, I chose "Attending" when I live so far away. It doesn't hurt to dream right? They are essential emo/math rock from PA, several members now in Snowing. Again this needs no description or FFO, it's pretty self explanatory. If you can't get into "Hoods Up", there just might be something wrong with you.
Snowing released Fuck Your Emotional Bullshit in mid 2009, everyone knew it was great musically but the recording quality made it hard to fall in love with (then again it was a demo). All the blogs we dig beat us to posting this better quality follow up album, but here it is regardless. The LP will be pressed and for sale early next year, so pick it up! For those of you who are new to Snowing, they are an emo/mathrock indie band from PA with ex members of Street Smart Cyclist and Boyfriends. I shouldn't have to tell you all "FFO" or "Sounds Like"; it is simply math rock by dudes who were in great bands. Listen to it for yourself.
P.s. Oh did I mention, the album cover is enough reason to love it.
Peter Broderick is one of those human beings that makes you realize there are special, beautiful and creative people merely living among us normal folk. Broderick has a long discography along with a long list of collaborators and other/previous bands. He is a member of Danish indie rock band Efterklang and tours or has toured with Horse Feathers, Balmorhea, She and Him, Norfolk & Western, and many many more. His 2008 record, "Home" was his first record in which he sang on. Before it, his records were beautiful, lush, instrumental lullabies.
Last night, after making my best of 2010 list, I told myself I wished he released a new record this year. Well, I found out he in fact did release a new record this year. Now, I didn't think I was aware of this new masterpiece, but Emily informed me otherwise. She implied that I knew about it and even told her about it. Am I calling her a liar? No. Do I remember said conversation happening? No, but nonethelless, this would be on my best of 2010 list if I wasn't too lazy to go back and add it. This album is a lot of the same stuff, but just slightly different vocals style, yet still just as beautiful. It's gorgeous. It's perfect. Get it now!

In some of my recent posts, I've been stating things I don't like at the beginning of the post a lot. It's really pretty negative to just talk about things I don't like, but. I'm going to do it again and this one is a doozy: I don't like Converge. Never really have. They are a great band and are amazingly talented musicians, but I just haven't been able to get into them. One thing is for sure, though. They are all extremely creative human beings and sooner or later all creative people look for multiple outlets, and thus gave birth to Supermachiner.
Supermachiner is a side project of mostly Converge frontman J.Bannon along with Converge guitarist and heavy music recording guru Kurt Ballou. The double album "Rust" features the first and only Supermachiner LP entitled "Rise of the Great Machine," along with some lost songs and previously never released stuff. Supermachiner are one of many, many bands in the post-hardcore/shoegaze genre and frankly sounds like a lot of other stuff, but it's still special. While it has it's heavy songs, its more ambient. Think Isis meets the slow, quiet Old Man Gloom songs. If you live somewhere with back, rural roads go get on one after sundown, put this on at maximum and get lost.
I hate Nas' solo work so much. His lyrics are good, for the most part, if you can look past his cockiness but the beats and music are just godawful and over produced. I love MF Doom, as trendy as that makes me. His crunchy, unique beats are extremely stylized and this is why this two volume "mash up" works so well.
This is simply just MF Doom beats with Nas over them. It shouldn't need too much more explaining. I don't partake in smoking greenery but people that do love MF Doom's work. Chill, funky hip hop and his endless "remix" reworkings make everything his entire catalog forever rewarding. Enjoy.
