The Sun Through a Telescope - Double EP

Bandcamp | Orange EP | Green/Black EP | Buy it!

"A pretentious and self-indulgent take on the heavy metal genre"

Awesome drone/ambient/doom/black metal solo project from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Very kind guy, Leigh Newton, sent this to us with tons of great links to more great metal. This double EP cassette can be bought  from the link above (highly suggest purchasing), both tapes included. FFO SunnO))), Thou, Boris, Om, and Earth.

''The brutality and ugliness of metal. The minimal beauty of ambient electronic music. It occurred to me that these two seemingly disparate styles compliment each other so well. This is the kind of music I wanted to be making. Something along the lines of JESU. But I wanted the heavy element to be slower, uglier, and more hypnotic . I wanted the ambience lifted right off of a BRIAN ENO album. Or STARS OF THE LID. Fuck it. But I went with the BUDDHA MACHINE. It sounded perfect.''

If you dig metal, check out Dwyer Records (owned and operated by Ottawa doom/sludge group Alaskan).

Shat Shorts - Seersucker and Sundresses

Washington, DC hardcore/punk influenced by Pissed Jeans, with their own twist. They have an awesome lineup of ex members from Dawn Treader, The Summer We Went West, Hobis, Mop Attack, Bezout's Identity, and 3 members of one of my current favorites Monument. Look out for a 7" this summer.

    Coate - Coate (Kot) 2011

Really, really awesome American Football-ish indie from Christ Church, New Zealand. Vocals are a bit more cleaner than Mike Kinsella's, but still great. Get excited about this.

    J. Mascis - Several Shades Of Why

So after almost 30 years in music J Mascis, singer of seminal 90s indie band Dinosaur Jr., finally got around to releasing a solo album. He's done a couple of acoustic things over the years, but this is his first solo studio album. If you haven't heard the old stuff check out his "Live At CBGB" album and "Martin and Me" as well, but scoop this one up first.

Several Shades Of Why showcases Mascis's guitar skills, and his Neil Young-ish sounding singing voice in a much more spare setting than any Dino Jr. album ever has. Plus "It Is Done" features backing vocal help from Band Of Horses front man, Ben Bridwell. This is a departure from anything you'd expect from his other releases, but it's still his style of "Ear Bleeding Country" minus the ear bleeding.
